SIOUX FALLS — Madison senior Shane Veenhof capped off an outstanding high school career by capturing two individual state championships at the South Dakota Class A State Track and Field Championships.

Veenhof dominated the hurdles events, winning the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles while also placing fourth in the 100-meter dash. He set a new state meet record in the 110 hurdles during the preliminary round with a blazing time of 14.17 seconds before returning to win the championship in 14.39 seconds. He also claimed the 300 hurdles title in 39.17 seconds after posting the fastest qualifying time of 38.89 seconds in preliminaries.

In the 100-meter dash, Veenhof finished fourth overall in 11.20 seconds.

The Bulldogs also received a state championship performance from junior Colton Davis, who won the boys pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 3 inches.

Madison’s distance runners contributed valuable team points as senior Dylan Gerdes earned sixth place in the 1,600-meter run, and followed that with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 meters.

The Bulldogs’ relay teams also found success. The boys 4×400-meter relay team of Malachi Ouverson, Gerdes, Nolan Nielsen and Guillem Megias qualified for the finals and finished sixth. Madison’s boys 4×800 relay team of Gerdes, Jack Driscoll, Ben Finck and Megias placed seventh.

For the Madison girls, senior Lydia Nelson earned a pair of top-10 finishes. Nelson cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to place sixth in the high jump and finished 10th in the javelin with a throw of 106 feet, 5 inches.

Junior Karstyn Miller added a state medal in the girls pole vault, finishing eighth after clearing 10 feet, 1 inch.

The Bulldogs boys placed 5th as a team, with 48 points. Sioux Falls Christian was 1st with 110.
