Shirley Pauline Mulvihill was born June 16, 1926, to John and Esther (Becker) Mulvihill. She grew up on the family farm in Lake County with her five siblings. Her years on the farm stayed close to her heart throughout her life, and she often shared memories from that time, including stories of Jack and Maude, the farm’s first team of horses.
After the loss of her mother at a young age, Shirley and her family moved to Madison. She attended St. Thomas Catholic School and graduated in 1944. Following graduation, Shirley went on to work at the Cozy Inn in Madison. Her faith was an important part of her life. She was a member of the St. Thomas Altar Society and a member of the Home Club.
Shirley married James Wingle in 1946, and together they raised seven children. Over the years, their family continued to grow, eventually giving Shirley 23 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.
Shirley loved fishing, playing cards, watching the Minnesota Twins, and spending time with the people she loved. She was remarkably patient and kind, and above all, she was an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Her home was always warm in every sense of the word — filled with love, family, and plenty of heat, with figurine owls and angels watching over everyone who came through the door.
Shirley is survived by her seven children: Jack Wingle of Madison, SD; David (Deb) Wingle of Arlington, SD; Larry (Deb) Wingle of Richland, WA; Rick Wingle of Madison, SD; Laureen (Mark) Aadland of Brookings, SD; Terry Joe Wingle of Marsing, ID; and Lynette (Dale) Nugent of Madison, SD; 23 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Jerry Mulvihill of Madison, SD, and Marlys (Jerry) Manthey of Anoka, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Wingle, in 1991; an infant son who passed away at birth; her great-grandson, Mason Robertson; and her siblings, Elaine Kearin, Margaret Loner, and Gene Mulvihill.
