No. 21 Dakota State rallied from an 11-point deficit and held on for a 27-25 win over Southern Oregon Saturday in Ashland, Oregon.
The Trojans improve to 4-and-1 on the season, while Southern Oregon falls to 1-and-3.
Southern Oregon led 11-nothing after the first quarter, but Dakota State scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-18 halftime lead.
Dakota State’s defense intercepted Southern Oregon quarterback Dom Montiel three times.
Tamareon “Frosty” Foster had two interceptions, including a 17-yard interception return for a touchdown. Aidan Jahns had the other interception.
Dakota State added a 24-yard field goal from Malte Hamann in the third quarter to take a 24-18 lead.
Southern Oregon regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Montiel threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Milan Reilly, putting the Raiders ahead 25-24 with just over six minutes remaining.
Dakota State answered with a 65-yard drive. Hamann finished it with a 22-yard field goal with 2:42 remaining, giving the Trojans a 27-25 lead.
Southern Oregon drove into field-goal range on its final possession. Andy Nguyen attempted a 31-yard field goal as time expired, but the kick went wide left.
Tray Hettick completed 27 of 42 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns. Maddox Kihne led Dakota State with eight catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Kaden Van Otterloo led the Trojans with 13 tackles.
Dakota State finished its Frontier Conference crossover schedule 2-and-0.
The Trojans now begin Frontier East Division play and return home next Saturday to face No. 2 Montana Tech. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Brian Kern Family Stadium in Madison.
