Kody Dawson, electric superintendent for the City of Howard, has been named the recipient of Heartland Energy’s 2026 Distinguished Service Award.

Dawson has worked for the City of Howard since 2012 after graduating from Mitchell Technical Institute’s power line construction and maintenance program and working for electric utilities across South Dakota.

Heartland Energy Director of Customer Relations Kelly Dybdahl said Dawson represents the commitment to public power through his service to the community and his focus on the future of Howard’s electric system.

Under Dawson’s leadership, Howard has converted about two-thirds of its electrical distribution system from overhead to underground. The project has improved reliability and reduced maintenance issues caused by squirrels, lightning and vegetation. Dawson hopes to eventually complete the conversion of the remaining third of the system.

Dawson has also worked with Heartland Energy on energy efficiency, economic development and other programs. Heartland says he has helped prepare the electric system to support new businesses and community growth.

Dawson, a Howard native, says his work comes down to a simple goal — keeping the lights on — while making investments that will benefit the community for years to come.

Heartland Energy presents the award each year during Public Power Week to recognize employees in customer communities who go above and beyond in serving their communities.
