The South Dakota wrestling community is still in shock and recovery, after a devastating injury to a high school wrestler over the weekend. On Saturday, during the Mid-Dakota Monster wrestling tournament in Presho, Kingsbury County wrestler Sutton Murphy injured his spinal cord, when the junior from Arlington fell on his head during a match.
According to Kingsbury County wrestling coach Steve Gilbertson, Sutton and his opponent got into a “compromising situation”. Sutton’s feet were in the air, he came straight down on his head. Gilbertson added that there’s no blame to anybody, saying it’s just an unfortunate situation.
Murphy was flown to Sioux Falls for emergency surgery that lasted seven hours. He suffered two broken vertebrae and a bruised spinal cord.
According to the latest update on Sutton’s SupportNow.Org page, he now has reflex activity and passed a pin test to see if he had suffered nerve damage.
