Students would be prohibited from using their cell phones during the school day in South Dakota under legislation approved Tuesday by the state Senate.

The 19-14 vote sends Senate Bill 198 to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Republican Rep. Taylor Rehfeldt of Sioux Falls is the lead House sponsor.

The legislation would allow schools to set their own policies for punishing students who don’t follow the ban.

Sen. Stephanie Sauder of Bryant, a retired school teacher, led the argument against the ban. She says 95% of school districts in South Dakota have a cell-phone policy in place and they did it without the Legislature telling them to do so.
