17 boys and girls wrestlers will represent the Madison Bulldogs at the State Wrestling meet this weekend in Sioux Falls.
The Madison girls qualified four wrestlers at the Region 3A meet on Friday. Ella Coomes was the regional champion at 100lbs, picking up four wins all by fall. Jewel Vardsveen was also a region champion at 105lbs. She pinned her first two opponents on Friday, and then defeated Sydney Caven of T.F. Riggs by technical fall. Devrah Meyer picked up three wins by fall, on her way to the 162lbs region championship.
Gracie Lobbins advanced to the semi finals at 120lbs, losing to Danny Borja of Mitchell on an 8-5 decision. She then picked up two wins by fall to take 3rd place, and qualify for state. Capri Johnson and Gloria Leonel took 4th and 6th respectively for Madison, but did not qualify for State.
Saturday, it was the boys’ turn in Mitchell. The Bulldogs had 13 of 14 wrestlers place in the top 4 in their weight classes to qualify for State.
Caleb Hodges and Sawyer Hegg were each region champions for Madison. Hodges was a winner at 157lbs, with a 10-3 decision in the championship match. Hegg won the 215lbs title match with a 4-3 decision.
Ashten Dorhout took 2nd at 285lbs, while Wyatt Pickard was 2nd at 126. Jade Wilkens and Nolan Wire each placed 3rd in their classes. Adam Willis, Alex Zwak, Brody Nielsen, Charles Aldana, Levi Quam, Luke Johnson, and Tyan Braskamp all placed 4th to advance to State.
The State Wrestling meet starts this Thursday with 1st round & Quarterfinal matches at the PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
