Sharon Schmidt, age 83, of Madison, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Madison Regional Health System.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Monday, March 23 rd at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel with Pastor Randall Tweeten officiating. Visitation will be from 3-5 PM onSunday at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel and will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will immediately follow the service and then burial will be in Ramsey Baptist Cemetery, Montrose.

Sharon Rae Johnson was born to Dean & Helen (King) Johnson on February 13, 1943 in Madison, SD. Sharon graduated from Madison High School and attended General Beadle State Teachers College. She was a teacher and a substitute teacher for 13years. On August 23, 1964, Sharon married Elvin Schmidt in Wentworth, SD. They rented a farm near Salem, SD for 2 years and then purchased a dairy farm south of Madison, where they lived until 2001 when they retired and moved to Madison. In 2020,they moved to Sioux Falls and lived there until just recently returning to Madison.
Sharon was a member of Central Baptist Church, Sioux Falls, and a former member of Ramsey Baptist Church, where she had served as a church clerk, church treasurer and church financial secretary. She was also a Sunday School teacher and a youth counselor for many years. She served on the Dakota Baptist Conference women’s District board as secretary and as treasurer. Sharon loved to travel, so she and Elvin often rode on the bus tours which would end up taking them to all four corners of the United States. She loved to collect recipe books and try new recipes.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Elvin of Madison; one daughter, Wendy (Scott) Fossell of Sioux Falls; two sons, Todd of Wessington Springs, SD and Alan of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Matthew & Jordyn Fossell, Trever (Heather) Schmidt; two great-grandchildren, Teegan & Luella Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother and grandson, Alec Schmidt.
