This week (April 13-17) is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in South Dakota.
It serves as an opportunity to increase awareness and response to summer severe weather hazards. The National Weather Service encourages people to think about personal safety plans during this week.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that 62% of businesses do not have an emergency plan in place.
Each day during Severe Weather Preparedness Week there is a specific theme to encourage people to focus their preparation and planning efforts.
This week’s information disseminated by the Weather Service will cover Weather Alerts and Warnings, Severe Storms, Wind, Hail & Lightning, Floods, Tornadoes, and Extreme Heat & Wildfires.
As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 Lake County 911 in conjunction with Lake County Emergency Management will be conducting the annual community tornado drill. We encourage residents, schools and businesses to practice their severe weather plans at this time.
The outdoor warning sirens will be activated at 10:15 a.m.
Also, a reminder that severe weather storm sirens are tested the last Friday of every month at noon in Madison
