A Madison man was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance on Monday.

Chase May, age 35, was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison, followed by 4 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

May was indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance by a federal grand jury in October of 2024 and pleaded guilty this past February.

May was suspected of selling cocaine in Madison.

Using a confidential informant, investigators made two controlled purchases from him in the Summer of 2024.

When authorities later learned that May had traveled to Omaha, which they believed he did to acquire more narcotics, they organized a traffic stop with the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Authorities pulled May over and discovered 18 ounces of cocaine, seven pounds of marijuana, a pistol, and cash in his vehicle. A subsequent search of his home revealed an additional three ounces of cocaine and more firearms.

Investigators believe May trafficked approximately one kilogram of cocaine.

This case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges.
