The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a traffic safety saturation patrol running May 11th through May 31st.

In a social media post, the Sheriff’s Office says that during this enforcement period, deputies will be focusing on seatbelt violations, speeding, and impaired driving. 

During this time there will be an increased law enforcement presence throughout Lake County.

South Dakota traffic fatalities dropped to a five-year low in 2025 with 123 deaths, a 16.9% decrease from 2024. Alcohol-related deaths increased slightly to 35 in 2025, up from 33 in 2024. Speed-related fatalities decreased to 21 in 2025, while 59% of fatalities involved unbelted occupants.
