The Moody County sheriff was recently sworn in as president of the National Sheriffs’ Association.
Sheriff Troy Wellman is now the leader of the United States’ largest organization that represents sheriffs and sheriff’s offices across the country.
Wellman grew up in the county in which he now serves as Sheriff. He was very active in 4-H and FFA learning leadership skills during his Elementary and High School career. He knew at a young age that he wanted to be in Law Enforcement.
He started to work towards that goal after graduation from High School as he attended the Western Dakota Tech Law Enforcement Technology class. He graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1997, working for a short time at the Pennington County Juvenile Services Center, before working for the Moody County Sheriff’s Office in 2001. He successfully ran for Sheriff in 2006, taking office in January of 2007.
Wellman will spend the next year working alongside sheriffs and public safety leaders across the country.
