Madison Post 25 won the inaugural “The Rock” Legion Baseball Tournament over the weekend.
Post 25 opened the tournament Friday with a big comeback over Parkston. Trailing by three entering the bottom of the 7th, Madison stormed back for a 7-6 walk-off win. A two-run double from Cale Johnson tied it up, and a single for Nolan Fischer sealed the win.
Things were easier on Friday night, as Madison cruised to a 12-0 win over Kimball. Cohen Hahn finished that game with 4 RBI. Quincy Kurtz scored 3 runs, while Tregg McGillivary and Casyn Crabtree each drove in 2.
Madison finished off a perfect record in their pool, with another walk-off win Saturday, beating Vaterloo/Valley Post 58, 3-2. Ryland Johnson drove in the game winner this time, driving in Ethan Sims for the win.
That put Madison into the semifinals on Sunday, where they took on Beresford. A six run 2nd inning put the game out of reach early, as Madison won 8-0. Braylon Oftedal picked up the win, while also driving in a pair of runs.
Madison then held off a Luverne comeback in Sunday’s championship game. Madison took the lead in the 2nd, with Henry Veenhof driving in Quincy Kurtz. Cale Johnson later scored an a wild pitch, and Kasyn Gust came in on an error to make it 3-0.
Henry Veenhof had cruised through 6 innings, but ran into trouble in the 7th. After striking out 6 in the game, Veenhof gave up a pair or runs, and left the game with a one run lead. Braylon Oftedal then struck our Blake Sauer of Luverne to the end the game, and give Madison the tournament victory.
The Rock Baseball Tournament was created in Memory of Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok, who was killed in the line of duty in 2024. As part of the tournaments opening ceremony on Friday, three players were presented with $500 scholarships each. Madison’s Cale Johnson, Volga’s Broden Teske, and Winner/Colome’s Quincy Phillips will either be continuing their baseball careers in college, or pursuing a law enforcement career.
