A Madison man has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of stalking, and violating a protection order. Robert Haug entered the not guilty plea on Tuesday at the Lake County Courthouse. 

Haug has been in custody at the Lake County jail since his arrest on July 10th. He is charged with stalking an individual this past May, and for violating a protection order, as well as a separate stalking charge against a different individual in July. 

Stalking and violating a protection order are both Class 1 Misdemeanors, punishable by up to 1 year in the county jail on each charge. Because Haug had previously been convicted of stalking in 2024, he was also charged with stalking- second or subsequent conviction. That is a Class 6 felony, punishable by up to 2 years in the state penitentiary. 

Lake County State’s Attorney Aaron McGowan says that, after Haug’s arrest on July 10th, a search warrant was executed at his residence. McGowan says officers found guns “on every level of the home” including long guns, and a loaded 9mm pistol with a round in the chamber, and over a thousand rounds of ammunition. 

Haug currently has three separate protection orders against him. McGowan says that possessing a firearm violates two of those orders. 

Haug’s court appointed attorney Jacob Dawson requested a personal recognizance bond on Tuesday. Judge Patrick Pardy had set bond at $150,000 cash only, and lowered that to $100,000 on Tuesday. 

A  motions hearing is set for November 17th, with a Jury trial scheduled for December 7th-11th.
