Residents in Lake County and five neighboring counties will have an opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste during the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Dacotah Bank Center in Brookings and is open to residents of Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake and Moody counties.

Accepted items include household cleaners, paint, pesticides, antifreeze, used motor oil, fluorescent bulbs, batteries and other common hazardous materials. Electronics, medical waste, tires, appliances, ammunition and business waste will not be accepted.

Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff unload materials. Each vehicle is limited to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household hazardous waste. Organizers also encourage attendees to bring non-perishable food items to support the Brookings Food Pantry.

If you have any questions about the types of items you can drop off, Call the City of Brookings Regional Landfill at 605-693-3667.
