Nonprofits from around Madison made their pitch on Monday for funding from the City of Madison in 2027. Total requests were on par with last year, when $488,050 was requested, and $418,050 was approved. 

The city is just beginning to develop its 2027 budget. Department budgets are starting to come together, with capital requests due by the 15th of this month. The city will reach out to nonprofits in the beginning of September to award next year’s funds. 

Last year, the city cut its nonprofit funds by $47,550. It was part of an overall belt-tightening that was made ahead of 2026 by the city, as it anticipated lower sales tax revenue. 

That prediction has come true thus far. Madison sales tax receipts for 2026 is down 5.21% from last year. 

South Dakota sales tax receipts have faced downward pressure primarily due to a sluggish agricultural economy.
