The 437 Project is underway this week, bringing a message of mental health awareness and suicide prevention across South Dakota. The number 437 represents the approximate number of miles across South Dakota
The project began in 2022 and brings together runners who take part in a 437-mile relay across the state. The goal is to raise awareness, encourage conversations about mental health and support suicide-prevention resources.
This year, 13 runners are taking part. The relay began in western South Dakota and will continue through Sunday, with runners traveling day and night before finishing in Sioux Falls.
One of this year’s runners is Lake County Sheriff Sarina Talich. Talich says she’s passionate about the project’s focus on mental health and hopes her participation can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental-health struggles.
The 437 Project will make a stop in Madison Saturday evening. The runners are scheduled to meet with the community at the United Methodist Church at 304 East Egan Avenue from 7 to 8 p.m.
The project has also provided financial support for suicide-prevention efforts. In its first two years, organizers reported donating more than 394-thousand dollars to the Helpline Center.
The runners are expected to finish their 437-mile journey in Sioux Falls Sunday.
