The Madison City Commission is continuing work on the city’s 2027 budget, with several financial issues highlighted in the October 5 commission agenda.

The proposed budget is being finalized ahead of the October 19 first reading of the 2027 Appropriation Ordinance.

The city also is looking at several major capital projects for 2027.

Among the projects recommended for inclusion are $786,000 for the Feeder 10 conversion, $399,000 for the Feeder 8 conversion. Another $1.1 million is listed for Green Substation transmission construction, while $140,000 is proposed for replacement of an aging hydrovac trailer.

Street projects also are part of the budget discussion. The proposed capital requests include $370,000 for the annual chip seal project and $184,000 for work on the RUS building. The city is also considering $411,355 for replacement of its street sweeper.

The budget discussion also includes employee compensation and benefits, with the city projecting costs for wages, Social Security, workers compensation and South Dakota Retirement System contributions.

Nonprofit funding is another issue. The city received 11 applications requesting a total of $487,050 for 2027. That compares with $418,950 in funding in 2026 and $466,500 in 2025.

The City Commission is expected to continue work on the 2027 budget before the first reading of the appropriation ordinance on October 19.
