The Region wrestling tournaments in South Dakota will be held this Friday and Saturday, ahead of next week’s State Wrestling Tournament. With a week left to go in the season, the latest Dakota Grappler rankings have the Madison boys ranked 7th and the girls 11th in Class A.
Madison’s Ella Coomes is the No. 1 ranked girls wrestler at 100lbs, while Jewel Vardsveen is No. 2 at 105. Devrah Meyer is 7th at 145, while Gracie Lobbins is an honorable mention at 120.
The Bulldogs Caleb Hodges is ranked as the No. 2 wrestling in the boys 157lbs class, behind Gage Lohr of Watertown. Lohr is a four time state champion, having won last year at 138 lbs. He will try to become just the second ever five time winner in Class A.
Ashend Dorhout is also ranked No. 2 for the Bulldogs at 285lbs, behind Elijah Schunke of Brandon Valley, who was a champion last year at 215lbs.
Other ranked wrestlers for Madison include Sawyer Hegg, who is rated 4th at 215lbs, and Wyatt Pickard who is 5th at 126. Charles Aldana is 7th at 113, while Alex Zwak and Levi Quam each are ranked 8th at 132 and 150 respectively. Jade Wilkens and Brody Nielsen are honorable mentions in their classes.
The Bulldogs girls will compete this Friday at the Region 3A tournament in Mitchell. The boys region will be held on Saturday in Mitchell. The State Tournament for Class A and B will be held February 26th-28th at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.
