Steven Hewitt, age 72, of Nevada, IA, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at his home.

Funeral service will be at 11 AM on Monday, August 10th at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery, Sioux Falls. 

Steven Allan Hewitt was born January 11, 1954 in Madison, SD, the son of Marlin & Beverly (Gile) Hewitt. He graduated from Madison High School in 1972. Shortly after graduation, Steven enlisted in the US Navy on September 8, 1972 and was honorably discharged on November 27, 1979. While in the military, he was united in marriage to Judith Ebdrup on September 20, 1975 in Bruce, SD. While serving in the Navy, he was stationed at Waukegan, IL for a few years and then to Puerto Rico for three more years. After his discharge from the US Navy, he returned to Brookings, SD. He completed his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology and began teaching at Crow Creek High School in Stephan, SD while he lived in Highmore, SD. A few years later, he started at Lead High School and Deadwood Middle School while living in Lead, SD and lastly, he retired from teaching at Marshalltown Schools in 2016, while living in Nevada, IA.

In his retirement years, he loved to go fishing and spending time with his family.

Steven is survived by his wife, of nearly 51 years, Judy of Nevada, IA; son, Todd (Lacey) Hewitt and their children, Quinn, Sienna & Brennan all of Brandon, SD; daughter, Jennifer (Tyson) Thormsagaard and their children, Collin & Annika all of Colorado Springs, CO; two brothers, Mark (Renee) Hewitt of Great Falls, MT and Greg Hewitt of Kansas City, MO and a niece, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda Rogne and her husband, David.
