Madison Middle School dedicated a new Peace Pole today, creating a lasting reminder for students and staff of the importance of peace, unity and respect.

The project was organized, planned and funded by the Madison Rotary Club, with Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel donating the dedication stone. Students attended the ceremony, and several had the opportunity to help place the pole.

Peace Poles are international symbols of peace that traditionally display the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” They are intended to inspire unity among people of different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs while encouraging individuals to build a more peaceful world through their everyday actions.

The Peace Pole movement began in Japan in 1955, following the devastation of World War II. Today, more than 250,000 Peace Poles have been installed in more than 180 countries.

Rotary International emphasizes peacebuilding as part of its efforts to promote understanding, resolve conflict and strengthen communities.

The school thanked Linda Liddell and the Madison Rotary Club for their work in making the project possible, as well as Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel for its contribution.

The new Peace Poll is located in front of the newly renovated Madison Middle School.
