A Madison family farm is giving visitors a closer look at what goes into organic farming.

Johnson Family Farms hosted a field day Thursday, where visitors learned about organic certification, crop rotation and the next generation of agriculture. The Johnsons have farmed organically for about 50 years.

Manager Aaron Johnson says the farm uses a six-year rotation that includes corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa, along with cattle. The rotation helps build soil health and improve the farm’s ability to handle drought and excess water.

Owner Charlie Johnson says organic farming means avoiding synthetic chemicals and relying on different practices to manage crops and livestock.

FFA representatives also joined the event to discuss bringing more young people into agriculture.

The field day also included a farm tour and discussions about organic certification, transitioning to organic production and marketing.
