The South Dakota Department of Education is now accepting applications from eligible organizations seeking to participate in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program.
The program is part of President Trump’s school choice initiative. Governor Larry Rhoden opted South Dakota into the program last year.
Scholarship Granting Organizations, or S-G-Os, can apply to participate and provide support for South Dakota students. The program is intended to expand educational opportunities for students attending public and private schools, as well as those participating in homeschooling, microschools and other learning environments.
State Education Secretary Doctor Joseph Graves says the goal is to give South Dakota students additional resources to help them pursue their goals after high school.
Beginning in 2027, families will be able to review an official list of qualifying scholarship organizations and choose which ones to support.
Taxpayers nationwide can contribute up to 1,700 dollars individually, or 3,400 dollars for married couples, to qualifying organizations and receive a 100-percent, nonrefundable federal tax credit.
More information, including application details for scholarship organizations, is available through the South Dakota Department of Education’s website.
