A woman was arrested in Madison last week following an investigation into what authorities describe as a large-scale, multi-jurisdictional check fraud scheme.
According to the Madison Police Department, officers received information on May 29 regarding a suspect believed to be involved in the fraud operation. Investigators identified a vehicle associated with the suspect in Madison through the city’s Flock License Plate Reader camera system and later located the vehicle parked at a residence.
During the investigation, officers learned that 46-year-old Brandy Scholl had been staying at the residence for several days. Scholl was contacted by law enforcement and arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Police also discovered a vehicle at the residence that had been reported stolen out of Sioux Falls. Search warrants were subsequently executed on the residence and associated vehicles.
During the searches, investigators reportedly recovered methamphetamine, OxyContin, drug paraphernalia, blank check stock, completed fraudulent checks, computer printers and multiple forged driver’s licenses. Authorities said the materials contained personal identifying information belonging to approximately 30 victims, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and fraudulent birth certificates.
Scholl has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of forged instruments with intent to defraud, identity theft and forgery.
The investigation was conducted with assistance from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
Scholl is currently being held at the Lake County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.
