The digital currency mining facility proposed by Giga Energy is no longer in development, after a proposed change was rejected by the City of Madison.

Camille Foley, Associate Director for Project Development at Giga Energy, spoke to the commission on Monday and said there has been a shift in their requirements since they obtained a conditional use permit from the city.

In a press release on Tuesday, the city reaffirmed it’s interest in the type of project that Giga had originally proposed.

“The City’s vision has not changed, and we remain committed to pursuing opportunities that can help stabilize electric rates,” said City Administrator Jameson Berreth. “At the same time, our expectations
remain unchanged. Any project must meet the standards and expectations established by the City, and those standards are not negotiable.”

The release goes on to say that The City is open to future opportunities that meet its established criteria, including projects that complement Madison’s electric utility, protect existing customers, and create benefits for the community.

City officials reiterated at the meeting Monday that Madison has spent no money on, nor built any infrastructure at the site.
